10 Ways to Save Money Now!

Saving money is something we all want to do, but to get it done sometimes requires an extra step or two in our lives. Here are 10 simple things you can start today to save money!

  1. If you had home and auto insurance with the same company for 2 years or more shop rates. Many companies give better rates to new customers than faithful ones.

Bonus: If you have your home and auto insurance with separate companies shop them together and see if you can save money by bundling.

  1. Call your internet, cable, or dish provider and ask for current specials discount.
  2. Call your cellphone provider and ask for current specials and discount.

Bonus for 2 and 3: If you want to get their best rate let them know you plan to leave and ask to speak to a retention specialist.  They are the ones that can give you the best deals!

  1. Review you pay stub for unwanted expenses.
  2. Review your monthly bills for unnecessary charges.

You would be surprised by how much we spend on redundant services or make donations to things that are not important to our financial goals as a family. (Yes, giving is important but wisely deciding what you give to is more important.)

  1. Turn your Gaming System to “red light off” not “yellow light standby”. Gaming Systems are one of the biggest energy vampires in the house when left “On” or in “Standby” mode.
  1. Track what you spend. This is one of the best ways to save money.  You can find free apps for your phone to help you track your spending.  We normally do better in an area of life we track.  If you want to lose weight, track what you eat.  If you want to run, track your time when you run.

Bonus: Start budgeting and decide where your money goes before you spend it.

  1. Pay with cash. It hurts more to use cash than plastic. You spend 12-18 percent less when you pay with cash even if you pay your credit cards off monthly.
  1. Buy cars that are at least two years old or more. New cars lose 60% of their value in the first two years.
  1. Buy in bulk when you can and if it saves money. Every so often items will be cheaper individually. This is rare but it does happen.

There are many other ways to save money but these are a few to get you started.  What are little things you have done that has saved you money?
